Thanks to the NHS Pharmacy First service, many women with a straightforward urinary tract infection (UTI) can now be assessed and treated directly at Millers Pharmacy, often on the very same day.

What exactly is a UTI?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) - sometimes called cystitis or a bladder infection, is one of the most common infections we see. In fact, around half of all women will experience a UTI at some point in their lives, so if you've got one, you're definitely not alone.
Most UTIs affect the bladder and are caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract. The good news is that they're usually straightforward to treat.
How do I know if it's a UTI?
The symptoms often come on quite suddenly. You may notice:
✔ A burning or stinging feeling when you pee
✔ Feeling like you need the toilet every few minutes
✔ Only passing a tiny amount of urine each time
✔ Pain or pressure in your lower tummy
✔ Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
✔ Occasionally, blood in your urine

Can a pharmacist really treat a UTI?
Yes - a you can get UTI treatment at a pharmacy - and that's the part many people are surprised by.
Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacists can assess your symptoms and, if appropriate, supply prescription-only antibiotics without you needing to see a GP first.
That means you could walk into Millers Pharmacy feeling uncomfortable and walk out with the treatment you need - all in one visit.
What happens when I come in?
Don't worry - there's nothing embarrassing about the appointment.
One of our pharmacists will invite you into a private consultation room where we'll ask a few simple questions about:
Your symptoms
How long you've had them
Your medical history
Any medicines you take
Most uncomplicated UTIs can be diagnosed from your symptoms, so you usually don't need to bring a urine sample.
The consultation normally takes around 10 minutes, and if Pharmacy First is the right option, we'll explain your treatment before you leave.
Is it free?
Yes - if you're eligible. The consultation itself is provided as part of the NHS Pharmacy First service.
If you normally pay for NHS prescriptions, you'll simply pay the standard NHS prescription charge.
If you're exempt from prescription charges, your treatment will also be free.
When should I see a GP instead?
Pharmacy First is brilliant for many straightforward UTIs - but sometimes a different type of care is needed.
We'll usually recommend another healthcare service if:
You're pregnant
You're under 16 or over 64
You're male
You keep getting UTIs
You have kidney pain, a fever, or are feeling very unwell
