If you have a sore throat, you may not always need to wait for a GP appointment. Many sore throats can now be assessed by a pharmacist, helping you get advice and treatment much more quickly.
At Millers Pharmacy, our team can provide advice on sore throat symptoms and, where appropriate, offer treatment through the NHS Pharmacy First service.
Can a pharmacist assess a sore throat?
Yes. Pharmacists are trained healthcare professionals who can assess common throat infections, ask about your symptoms and help decide whether self care, over the counter treatment or further medical review may be needed.
This means many patients can get seen sooner without needing to contact their GP surgery first.
What will the pharmacist ask me?
Your pharmacist will usually ask about:
how long you have had symptoms
whether you have fever
difficulty swallowing
swollen glands
cough or cold symptoms
any breathing concerns
This helps build a picture of whether the sore throat is likely to be viral, bacterial or part of another illness.
Can I get treatment from the pharmacy?
Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, pharmacists can assess certain sore throats and may be able to supply treatment where appropriate.
You will also be given advice on pain relief, hydration and what warning signs to look out for.
When should I still seek urgent medical help?
You should seek urgent medical advice if you have:
difficulty breathing
severe difficulty swallowing
significant dehydration
symptoms rapidly worsening
