Insect Bite? When to Worry About an Infected Insect Bite

Insect bites are common, especially during warmer months, and most are harmless. But sometimes a bite can become more swollen or painful, and people often wonder whether they’re dealing with an infected insect bite. In this guide, we’ll explain what’s normal, what’s not, and when your local pharmacy can help.

What do normal insect bites look like?

Most insect bites cause a small red bump with some itching or mild swelling. They can be annoying, but they usually settle within a few days without any treatment.

When should you start to worry?

Sometimes a bite doesn’t follow that pattern.

If you notice the area becoming more red, more swollen or more painful over time rather than improving, it’s worth keeping a closer eye on it. A bite that feels warm, looks angry or continues to grow can be a sign that it’s becoming irritated or infected.

What does an infected insect bite look like?

An infected bite often looks quite different from a normal one. The redness may spread, the swelling can increase and it may become painful rather than just itchy. In some cases, you might notice discharge from the bite or start to feel generally unwell.

Can a pharmacist treat insect bites?

Yes - and this is where many people don’t realise how much pharmacies can now do.

Under the Pharmacy First Service, pharmacists can assess and treat infected insect bites without you needing to see a GP. That means you can walk in, have it checked and receive treatment where appropriate.

When should you seek urgent medical help?

You should seek urgent help if you experience:

  • difficulty breathing

  • swelling of the face or throat

  • signs of a severe allergic reaction

  • rapidly spreading redness or severe pain
