If you’re worried about unprotected sex or contraception failure, it’s important to know that help is available quickly. The morning after pill is a safe and effective form of emergency contraception — but timing is key.
What is the morning after pill?
The morning after pill is a type of emergency contraception that helps prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It works mainly by delaying ovulation, meaning an egg isn’t released.
What are the options?
There are two main types available in the UK:
Levonorgestrel (e.g. Levonelle) works best within 72 hours (3 days) Ulipristal acetate (e.g. ellaOne) can work up to 120 hours (5 days)
The sooner you take it, the more effective it is.
When should you take it?
As soon as possible. Even though some options work for up to 3–5 days, effectiveness decreases the longer you wait. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to seek advice as soon as you can.
Can you get it from a pharmacy?
Yes — and this is where many people don’t realise how straightforward it is. You can access the morning after pill directly from a pharmacy without seeing a GP, and there’s no need to book an appointment.
At Millers Pharmacy, this is a walk-in service available at any time, so you can get help quickly when you need it.
What happens at the consultation?
The pharmacist will ask a few quick questions to make sure the treatment is safe and suitable for you. This is done in a private consultation room, and everything is handled confidentially and without judgement. Are there any side effects? Some people may experience mild side effects such as nausea, headaches or changes to their next period, but most people tolerate it well. When should you get further advice? If your period is late, unusual or you’re unsure whether the treatment has worked, it’s important to follow up.If you need emergency contraception, pop into your local Millers Pharmacy. We offer a confidential, non-judgemental walk-in service, so you can get the treatment you need quickly and discreetly.
If you’re looking for something more long-term, we can also help with regular contraception options — just speak to the team or book an appointment online.
