High blood pressure doesn’t usually cause symptoms, but it can increase the risk of heart attacks, stroke, and kidney problems. A quick check at your local pharmacy can help catch it early — and it’s completely free through the NHS at participating branches.
What to Expect
We’ll use a simple arm cuff to check your blood pressure in a private consultation room. It’s quick, painless and takes less than 10 minutes.
Tip: Avoid caffeine, smoking, or exercise for 30 minutes before your check to get the most accurate reading.
Understanding Your Results
-
Normal: below 120/80 mmHg
-
Raised: 120–129/<80 mmHg
-
High (hypertension): 130/80 mmHg or higher
If your reading is high, we may offer a 24-hour monitor (ABPM) to get a more accurate picture.
Who Should Get Checked?
Blood pressure checks are especially important if you:
-
Are aged 40 or over
-
Have a family history of high blood pressure
-
Are overweight or inactive
-
Eat a high-salt diet
-
Are pregnant (to check for signs of pre-eclampsia)
